[UPDATE 12/24, 8:36 A.M.] The Douglas County District Attorney’s office has allowed the release of the name and status of the person involved in Tuesday’s vehicle fire and Officer Involved Shooting.
Investigators have identified the driver in this incident as Robert J. Jenkins, 55, of Roseburg. According to officials, Jenkins was transported to Lower Umpqua Hospital where he was pronounced dead at approximately 6:51 P.M. Tuesday night.
The investigation is ongoing.
Winchester Bay, Ore — Oregon State Police and the Douglas County Major Crimes Team are investigating an officer involved shooting on Highway 101 about two miles south of Reedsport.
According to officers, a vehicle fire, which started before police arrived, involved multiple small explosions, and investigators requested the OSP explosives unit respond to make the scene safe prior to further investigation. The highway is currently blocked and commuters are asked to use alternate routes.
The officer involved was not injured. The suspect in the incident was transported from the scene to the hospital with reportedly critical injuries.
